The Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream is a multi-purpose, neighborhood resource center serving a low-income, ethnically diverse neighborhood. Services include counseling, casework, mentoring, community development, services for older adults and after-school and summer programs for children and youth.

Job Responsibilities

The Prevention Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of an evidence-based program focused on drug and alcohol prevention activities for 80 students in grades 7 & 8 that are at-risk through an after school mentoring program in Carol Stream and immediately surrounding communities. Specific responsibilities include recruiting and enrolling students in the after school program; teaching a prevention curriculum;  collaborating with schools; launching two communication campaigns in partnership with the established ATOD coalition for the purpose of educating and promoting the reduction of alcohol and prescription drug misuse among 8th-12th grade students; establishing a youth advisory committee composed of junior high students; creating a resource guide for youth; organizing and participating in National Prevention Week activities and program reporting.


Ability to engage, teach and motivate junior high students around positive choices; BA/BS in education, youth development or related field; 3 years of direct service experience with experience with middle school students; previous administrative experience and/ or volunteer management experience preferred. Sensitivity to the needs of students and families from low-income, high-risk and cultural diverse backgrounds. Strong written and verbal communication ability; networking skills; research ability; and group facilitation ability. Knowledge of principles of substance abuse prevention. A valid IL driver’s license, good driving record and reliable vehicle required. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word/ Excel.


Full-time. M-F from 10am-6:30pm. Occasional Saturdays for community events.


Salary for this position falls between $16.25 and $18.50 per hour based on education, skills and experience.
